The Peacock's Blackguard impression

The Black Guard is the name of a Home Guard that was made up of towns-people. Their sole purpose was to protect the town from any aggressor during the war. Usually the Mayor or a prominent citizen was its Captain. They were a Para military group that also had lieutenants, sergeants and corporals. They used what they had available for weapons, shotguns, squirel rifes, pistols, muskets, knives or tomahawks. Their wife's and sweethearts would have made them battle shirts as a uniform that matched(as shown above). In a skirmish against the troops in the area they would have helped the side that favored saving there town. During the war Home Guards were a common thing and the armies would have to deal with them but they were not a significant threat.

The Concept of....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Black Guard started with the 5th Texas Company E when Captain Steve Humphreys (affectionately remembered as "Cousin Charles") created the Home Guard unit with in the 5th. We portrayed a southern home guard at early war events especially in 1861-2. I remember an event in Kentucky in the month of November where we were doing a tactical against the Yankee hoard for a weekend. The first night the temperature got down to 25 degrees and the second night was 15 degrees. My water froze in the canteen and didn't sleep well but it was a very well remembered time.
